Improvisations in Spatial Audio I | Ben Globerman and Caleb Abbott

This project creates an immersive spatial audio experience using a brand new locally built synthesizers, the FS-256. Experiments in Spatial Audio I is comprised of both a four speaker installation and a live performance component, and will be heard through four unique audio channels and speakers in the round.

The FS-256 is an additive synthesizer currently in Beta testing designed by Ottawa based electrical and computer engineer, Eric Dyer. Using a unique synthesis architecture based on a field programmable gate array circuit, the FS-256 has advanced computational power, allowing for hundreds of oscillators. Additive synthesis is the method of creating sound by summing sine waves, one of the most fundamental constructs in mathematics. Sine waves convey a certain sonic purity that resonates but when multiplied, can create expansive and unfamiliar sounds.

Additive synthesis is rarely seen in hardware as it requires substantial computing power. As such, the FS-256 promises a sonic character that is unique and not often heard in live settings.

Drawn exclusively from recordings of the FS-256, a live four speaker installation is being developed. This installation will play, looped, as a pre-show, where audiences can hear experimentations with the newly developed synthesizer. A performance using all four speakers will follow, using exclusively sounds from the FS-256, manipulated live with spatial audio.

Ben Globerman is a musician, sound designer, and multimedia artist. He has composed works for film, theatre, and specializes in developing multi-channel audio installations - working on projects for hospitals, fashion shows, and public transit. He has produced multiple conceptually driven audio and video installations in three, five, and eight speaker arrangements. Ben’s work uses sound to manipulate physical spaces creating engaging and kinetic experiences for audiences. His works have been shown in City Halls and private galleries alike, and his installations have tackled themes of religious pluralism, bleeding-edge technology, and the therapeutic qualities of sound.


Caleb Abbott is an electroacoustic musician with a practice centred on vocal-solo improvisational and experimental music using systems developed in Max/MSP and Common Lisp. Abbott is a professor at the University of Ottawa School of Music in the undergraduate and masters programs teaching real-time and non-real-time sound design, and electronic music theory and production. In addition to performance, composition, and education, Abbott is a cultural programmer focused on multidisciplinary artistic presentation and curation.
