Maude Rioux-Villard is a classically trained singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist.
For the past few years, they have
devoted themself to their solo project under the alias Modeville, in which they refine the luminous folk, dream folk and psychedelic genres with their own blend of poetry in French and English, and explores the limits of indie, shoegaze, ambient and verge on grunge.
Featuring the viola, their debut EP Confortable focuses on vocal harmonies in the indie-folk genre, where classical influences can be heard (e.g., with solo viola passages).
In this EP, the artist discovers themself through traumas and sweet childhood memories. Their second EP, Quartz rose, features three tracks: a gloomy experimental song (Flowerland) and two ambient/atmospheric experiments (Mia and Sunbeam).
Quartz rose contient une chorale et un quatuor auto-produits et des échantillons
d’enregistrement de terrain de nature (morceau de quartz rose frotté avec
de l’eau, pas sur un sentier).
Rioux-Villard is currently producing their first album (under Modeville), where they experiment as much with the heaviness of emotion as the heaviness of sound. The album bears witness to the artist's emotional growth through difficult times, and the beauty that lives in pain and healing. It is a farewell speech to a period in their life that wounded them. Rioux-Villard's work communicates vulnerability, youth, complex emotions, the sublime and is full of humanity.
